A Walk Around the Old Port Town Niigata
During the Meiji Period (1868-1912) when the ship was a mainstream mode of transportation, Niigata’s Nuttari district gave rise to many shops peddling fermented foods along the former Kurinoki River, which flowed into the port. Even now, Nuttari is a charming district and home to many shops and storehouses selling miso paste, soy sauce, sake and natto beans. Harbor town, Yamanoshita is a fun place for a stroll through its market that houses various popular shops and stands.
